Derby, Kansas
Remodeling, Roofing, and Cabinetry for Derby Homes.
Derby runs its own building department, separate from the county office that covers Wichita. We permit here, build here, and our millwork shop is a short run up the road.
How Derby works
In Sedgwick County, but not on the county permit desk.
Derby is inside Sedgwick County, which leads plenty of people to assume its permits run through the same Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department that covers Wichita. They do not. Derby operates its own Building Trades and Inspections department on North Mulberry Road, with its own permit desk, its own inspectors, and its own contractor licensing classes.
For you that means two things. Your contractor needs to submit to the right office, and the review and inspection windows need to be built into the schedule from the start. We treat that as part of the job rather than a surprise that surfaces after demolition.
We carry contractor licenses across the Wichita metro jurisdictions rather than just the county office, Derby included. That is less common than it sounds: plenty of contractors are licensed in Wichita proper and then work the surrounding cities under someone else's license or scramble for one after the contract is signed. We pull your Derby permits ourselves.
What we build here
Our Derby work.
Kitchen and bath remodeling
Derby has a deep stock of family homes built through the 1970s and 1980s. Opening up those kitchens is the single most common thing we are asked to do here.
Roofing and storm restoration
Derby sits right in the path of the storms that come up from the south. We document damage, meet your adjuster, and replace the roof properly.
Custom millwork and cabinetry
Built in our Wichita shop, a short run down Rock Road, and installed by the same team that built it.
Home additions
Room additions and garage expansions on Derby lots, permitted and inspected through the city building department.
Commercial construction
Build-outs and renovations for Derby businesses, scheduled around your operating hours instead of ours.

Derby Questions We Get Asked
Who issues building permits in Derby?
Derby is in Sedgwick County but runs its own Building Trades and Inspections department on North Mulberry Road, separate from the county MABCD office that serves Wichita. Permits and inspections for Derby projects go through the city, and inspections are scheduled with the city permitting desk. We handle the submittal and the scheduling as part of the job.
Are you licensed to build in Derby?
Yes. Derby maintains its own contractor licensing separate from the county, with three classes: Class A for all commercial and residential construction, Class B for residential and commercial up to three stories, and Class C for residential only. JAKS holds licenses across the Wichita metro jurisdictions, Derby included, so we pull permits here directly rather than working under someone else.
How long do Derby permits take?
It depends on the scope and how complete the drawings are, and the city asks for inspection requests at least a day ahead. What matters for your schedule is that the review window gets built into the plan up front rather than discovered halfway through, which is how we run it.
How far is your shop from Derby?
Our shop and millwork floor are on East Kellogg in Wichita, a short run north of Derby. Being close matters most on the days something needs a decision on site, and it is why our cabinetry lands on Derby jobs without sitting in a supplier queue first.
Do you handle hail claims in Derby?
Regularly. Storm restoration is a core part of our roofing work, and Derby gets hit. If a storm has just come through, get the roof documented quickly; claims go far more smoothly when the damage is fresh and clearly dated.
