Custom Cabinets in Wichita: What Changes When the Shop Is Local
Most kitchen cabinetry sold in Wichita is ordered from somewhere else. Here is what is different when it is built here, and what to ask before you order from anyone.
"Custom" is used loosely in cabinetry. It can mean a catalog with more options, a semi-custom line with a few modified widths, or a shop that cuts the parts for your kitchen from your measurements. The differences show up in three places: how the cabinets fit, how long they take, and what happens when something needs to change.
JAKS builds cabinetry in our own shop on East Kellogg in Wichita. What follows is what that changes for the homeowner, stated plainly.
Five things a local shop changes
The size is your wall, not the nearest increment
Supplier cabinets come in fixed widths and the gap to your wall is covered with a filler strip. A shop-built cabinet is the dimension the opening is, so the space is storage instead of trim.
The timeline is ours to control
A supplier order joins a national queue. A shop order is scheduled on our floor, which is why a shop-built kitchen is typically ready weeks sooner and why the date we give you holds.
Matching existing cabinetry is a normal request
Extending a kitchen, adding an island, or carrying cabinetry into a pantry means matching a door profile, a species, and a finish. That is shop work. A catalog can only offer what it already makes.
The people who built it install it
Fit problems are solved fastest by whoever built the piece. When the builder and the installer are the same crew, there is no handoff and nobody to call back.
Changes happen ten minutes away
A drawer front that needs to be a half inch shorter is a trip across town, not a reorder with a six-week lead.
Four questions to ask any cabinet maker
Where are the cabinets built?
Ask to see the shop. If the answer is a showroom and an order form, the cabinets are coming from somewhere else and the timeline belongs to that somewhere else.
Who installs them?
The shop that built them, or an installer they hired? Both can work; the first removes the most common source of fit problems.
Can you match what I already have?
Bring a door. A shop can tell you on the spot how close a match is possible.
What is in the quote?
Boxes, doors, drawer fronts, hardware, finish, delivery, and install should each be visible. An allowance that is not broken out is a number that will move.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much do custom cabinets cost in Wichita?
It depends on the size of the kitchen, the species and finish, and how much of the interior is fitted with drawers, pull-outs, and specialty storage. Custom is not automatically more expensive than mid-grade semi-custom from a supplier once you account for what fits and what is wasted. We quote your actual kitchen in writing, for free.
Can I order only the cabinets and not a full remodel?
Yes. Standalone cabinetry projects, including door and drawer-front orders, are a normal part of what our shop builds whether or not JAKS is doing the surrounding work.
What wood species do you work in?
Paint-grade hardwoods for painted kitchens, and stain-grade species such as white oak, maple, hickory, walnut, and cherry. If you have a species in mind that is not listed, ask.
Do you build bathroom vanities and built-ins too?
Yes. The same shop builds vanities, pantries, home office built-ins, mudroom storage, wet bars, and commercial casework.
How long does a custom kitchen take?
Typically weeks sooner than ordering through a supplier, because the cabinets are built on our floor rather than queued elsewhere. We give you a date with the estimate and we build to it.
