What a Kitchen Remodel Costs in Wichita

Three ranges for Wichita kitchens, the decisions that move a kitchen budget more than any single selection, and what a published number never includes.

About these numbers

The ranges below are our read of the Wichita market for three common scopes, with a regional survey average beside each one so you can see where they sit. The regional figures quoted are from the 2025 Cost vs Value survey for the West North Central region, which includes Kansas; our own ranges bracket them for Wichita. They are ranges, not quotes: the number for your kitchen depends on whether anything moves and on the selections you make.

Most kitchen cost figures online are national averages with no scope attached. A kitchen that keeps its layout and a kitchen that moves the sink and opens a wall are different projects, and the price difference between them is larger than the difference between any two countertops.

In Wichita, a refresh that keeps the cabinet boxes runs roughly $25,000 to $40,000, a full remodel in the same footprint roughly $60,000 to $95,000, and a remodel that moves walls or plumbing starts around $120,000. The width of each band is the honest part.

Three kinds of project

Refresh, full remodel, or a new layout.

  • Refresh, same layout, roughly $25,000 to $40,000

The cabinet boxes stay. New doors and drawer fronts from our shop, new countertops, sink and faucet, backsplash, lighting, paint, and often flooring. This is the right project when the kitchen works and looks tired. The regional survey average for this scope is about $28,000.

  • Full remodel, same footprint, roughly $60,000 to $95,000

Everything comes out and goes back in the same place: new cabinets built in our Wichita shop, countertops, backsplash, flooring, lighting, plumbing fixtures, and appliances. Walls and the sink stay where they are, which keeps mechanical and permit work contained. The regional survey average is about $81,000.

  • Full remodel with layout changes, $120,000 and up

Walls move, the island grows, the sink or range relocates, or the kitchen opens to the next room. Structural work, new plumbing and electrical runs, custom cabinetry, and stone counters. The regional survey average for an upscale major remodel is about $159,000, and kitchens that take on an addition go beyond it.

What moves the number

The decisions that actually set a kitchen budget.

  • Whether anything moves

Keeping the sink, range, and walls where they are is the single largest saving in a kitchen. The moment plumbing or structure relocates, the mechanical trades and the permit scope grow with it.

  • Cabinetry

Usually the largest line and, from a factory, the longest wait. Ours are built in our own Wichita shop, sized to your walls, so the schedule is ours to control and odd dimensions cost nothing extra.

  • Countertops

Laminate, solid surface, quartz, and natural stone span a wide range for the same square footage, and edge profiles, cutouts, and seams add to it.

  • Appliances

A standard package and a professional-grade package can differ by more than the cost of the cabinets around them. Decide this early because it fixes cabinet sizes.

  • Electrical and lighting

Older Wichita kitchens often need added circuits to meet current code once the room is opened up. That is a cost of doing it properly, not an upsell.

What it leaves out

What the ranges leave out.

These are the usual sources of a budget shortfall. None of them appears in a published range because none of them is known until the work starts or the decisions are made.

  • Surprises behind the walls

Wiring, plumbing, and framing that do not meet current code have to be corrected once exposed. We say so in writing when we find it, before the work continues.

  • Adjoining rooms

Opening a kitchen to a dining or living room pulls flooring, paint, and trim from those rooms into the scope.

  • Design and selections

Time spent on layout, drawings, and selections before a firm price. A paid design step is how the firm number gets firm.

  • Temporary living

Most families keep living in the house. Budget for eating out and a makeshift kitchen for the weeks the room is down.

On the first visit we give you a budget range for the project you describe. Once we have measured and you have made the big decisions, you get a written proposal for the whole room under one contract, with permits handled and a written schedule. We run several pricing and payment structures and lay them out with the proposal.

Kitchen Remodel Cost Questions

How much does a kitchen remodel cost in Wichita?

For most Wichita homes, a refresh that keeps the cabinet boxes runs roughly $25,000 to $40,000, a full remodel in the same footprint roughly $60,000 to $95,000, and a remodel that moves walls or plumbing starts around $120,000. The 2025 regional survey averages are about $28,000, $81,000 and $159,000 for those three scopes.

Why do custom cabinets from a local shop not cost more?

Because the shop is ours. There is no dealer margin and no freight, sizes are built to the room instead of filled with fillers, and the cabinets are ready when the site is ready instead of weeks after.

How long does a kitchen remodel take?

Once cabinets and selections are in hand, most same-footprint kitchens are three to six weeks on site, and layout changes add to that. The schedule is written into the proposal.

Do I need a permit for a kitchen remodel in Wichita?

Cosmetic work does not need one. Moving plumbing, adding circuits, or changing structure does, through the Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department for Wichita and most of Sedgwick County, or the city building department in Andover, Derby and other towns with their own. We pull the permits and schedule the inspections.

What is the most common budget surprise?

What is behind the walls in a house built before the current code. We cannot see it until demo, and we price the correction in writing before continuing.

Can I stay in the house during the remodel?

Almost everyone does. Plan for a temporary kitchen for the duration and expect dust control and a daily clean-up as part of the job.
